Certainly the news media has faced cutbacks and layoffs before, but not like this. No wonder the media is so focused on gloom and doom -- they are living it.
The number one media relations rule is be student of the media. Well understand this, reporters are hurting and scared. PR pros take note.

I've wondered recently of the symbiotic relationship between mainstream media and online journalism. There can be little doubt that the latter has had a fiscally detrimental effect on traditional media. Yet so much of what occurs online is dependent on the the validated work of credible, experienced, professional journalists, most of whom-at this time-work for traditional media. It'll be interesting to see what happens as those resources diminish (or are redeployed by new media).

I think we're seeing more mainstream media turn to the MOJO concept -- mobile journalism. The Record newspaper here in NJ, recently closed it's main editorial HQ and basically told reporters to work from home and the communities they cover. Simply put, you are reporters and must adhere to ethical standards, at the same time, they should work and think like a blogger. Words are colliding.

No doubt. Might also be interesting to see if those in PR who seem hidebound to traditional media relations tactics (probably doesn't include those reading this blog) move into the new world as journalists with whom they have relationships change their MOs.
