Puerto Rico Licenses PR

The Puerto Rico Public Relations Association (Asociación de Relacionistas Profesionales de Puerto Rico) is reporting that effective August 8, 2008, the practice of public relations is licensed in Puerto Rico. Over the next several months a government Regulatory Board will be created to develop the licensing procedures, etc. The law establishes:

  • The Regulatory Board for Public Relations Practitioners
  • Educational requirements, ethics and continued education procedures and
  • Requirements for the licensing of the Public Relations practice in Puerto Rico.
Edward Bernays spent many years trying to have public relations licensed and in 1992 a bill was introduced to establish registration and licensing. The bill did not pass but the controversy over licensing continues.

The impact on the profession is TBD. Stay tuned for updates.
